thoseMFs "Formula Vol. 1"

This tape is a collabo between Flipout, Kemo and myself - aka THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS! The Formula mixtapes were done to promote a night we did at Element Sound called Formula Thursdays. It was basically a good music night - we played Hip-Hop, R&B, Dancehall, Funk & Soul. We kept it pretty real for the most part - mad fucking real actually. No BS allowed!

JAY SWING #26 "The Second Coming"

Tape #26 (2000). This tape is a special one. Kemo gave me a Sazon verse for the intro - something we never had the opportunity to do when he was with us. As far as everything else on this tape goes nothing else really matters. Sazon & Don Primo "La Calle", Red & Checkmate "Runnin' Gun", Kardi "Ol Time Killin'", and Checkmate & Concise's "1-900-Hustler Promo" are easily my favourite records on this tape. The only record from our friends down south that can fuck with those is J Dilla and Frank & Dank "Love (A Thing Of The Past)".

JAY SWING #25 "Rap Life"

Tape #25 (1999). Concise rocks the intro on side A over EPMD's "Rap Is Outta Control" and Prev from Swollen Members blessed the intro for side B. This one has one of the all time classics from Pharoahe Monch in "Simon Says". Mobb Deep & Nas "It's Mine", ODB "Got The Money", and Mos Def "Ms. Fat Booty" all claim classic status too. Truth Enola "Ill Love" and Red Life "Pylar Sanchez" are classics in my books too - just classics that most people haven't heard.

JAY SWING #24 "2 Tons"

Tape #24 (1999). We used the LL Cool J Radio boom box for the cover. The title 2 Tons doesn't really make any sense of reference anything specific - pretty suspect title if you ask me. Gangstarr "Full Clip" and Q-Tip "Vivrant Thing" are the stand outs on this tape. Checkmate "Devil vs. the Maker" and Saukrates "Bag The Biscuit" are equally as dope - just not quite as known.

JAY SWING #23 "Giant Size"

Tape #23 (1998). I'm a Michael Jordan stan, a sneaker head, and this was my 23rd tape. Add Mars Blackmon and a title that makes sense and this was the easiest cover concept to come up with! The top dog on this tape is hands down Mobb Deep "Quiet Storm". This is the bootleg version that doesn't have the chorus in it which for my money is how it should have stayed. Eminem & Royce "Nuttin' To Do", Pacewon "I Declair War", and Nas "Nas Is Like" are all close seconds. I couldn't tell you who Da Matrix or Deadly Snakes are but apparently I thought enough of them in '98 to put their songs on this tape. Either that, or a record rep got at me and promised some drops or exclusives from an a-list artist in exchange for giving this groups some burn - maybe both actually. Doesn't matter though because this tape is all about that cover art! (Air Jordan 1's, 3's, and 4's are the three illest sneakers of all time)

JAY SWING #22 "On Top Of Thangs"

Tape # 22 (1998). For the intro to the intro this tape has a snippet from Hard Copy (or one of those "news" TV shows) that talks about Vancouver and how it is all about sex, weed, and debauchery. Funny shit. Checkmate and Concise handle the intros again and Virus handles the cover. Looking back on this tape it was loaded with heat and holds up selection wise better than most. Pete Rock & Deck "Tru Master", High & Mighty "B-Boy Document", Noreaga "Superthug", Red Lide & Saukrates "Yaga Ya Ya", and Em & Dre "Guilty Conscience" are my favourites on this tape. Gangstarr & M.O.P. "1/2 and 1/2", Xzibit "Shroomz", Council "On Top Of Thangs", Tha Superfriendz "Are You That Somebody", Jay-Z "Hard Knock Life", Whoridaz "Get Lifted", Redman "I'll Be That", Brand Nubian "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" and La & Rae's "Spring Water" are also stand out records. There probably could be more if I gave this tape another listen too. This one is loaded.

JAY SWING #21 "Slang Eiditorial"

Tape #21 (1998). This cover is detailed right down to the fine print. Virus again and again. The tape marks the first time Concise blesses an intro when he rocks over a Diamond D beat with Checkmate. This may be my favourite into of any of these tapes. Dilated Peoples win favourite record on the strength of Revolutions cuts on "Work The Angle". He just destroyed every record with scratches that came before him and made artists step their scratch chorus game up on every record that came after this song. Literally some next level shit. Cocoa B's "Black Trump" and Gangstarr & Inspekta Deck "Above The Cloud" come a close second. The tape has a couple of recordings of Rahzel from a show he did in Vancouver too. Exclusives!

JAY SWING #20 "Guess Who's Back?"

Tape #20 (1997). Virus comes through on the cover art again. I think this was going to be a cover of Elements Mag but we never finished it. I'm sure there is a floppy disc somewhere with half the mag done. Kardi hit me with an intro on this one as well as All About Us. Lots of big records on this tape. Rascalz "Northern Touch" and Gangstarr "Ya Know My Steez" are the favourites. Nas & Large Pro "One + One", Noreaga "Blood Money", Jay-Z "A Million And One", and Reflection Eternal "Fortified Love" are all a close seconds.
